<p>Call for Papers</p>
<p>The impact of David Lewis on contemporary philosophy is still tangible, ten years after his<br />
premature departure. The conference intends to discuss Lewis long-lasting contribution in the<br />
fields of logic and metaphysics, with particular focus on the nature of modality, his views on<br />
possible worlds, counterfactuals, causation, and convention. We also wish to provide a setting for<br />
young philosophers and logicians to present topics related to Lewis philosophy and discuss the<br />
state of art of his legacy in the contemporary philosophical debate.</p>

<p>We invite all scholars working in Lewisian philosophy to submit an abstract on one of the following<br />
topics:</p>
<p>1)     Convention<br />
2)     Mereology, properties, and persistence<br />
3)     Counterfactuals<br />
4)     Modality and Possible worlds<br />
5)     Causality and Time</p>
<p>Please submit abstracts in English and prepared for blind-review, of no more than 500 words, in<br />
either .pdf, .doc, or .rtf format. Submissions must be sent by email attachment to the organising<br />
committee at <a href="mailto:conlewis2011@gmail.com">conlewis2011@gmail.com</a> by March 1, 2011. An acknowledgment of reception will<br />
be sent.<br />
Please specify on a separate page name, affiliation, e-mail address, and the session in which the<br />
paper is to be presented. Successful applicants will be notified by April 1, 2011.</p>

<p>La redazione del gruppo di giovani ricercatori APhEx (<em>Analytical and Philosophical Explanation</em>) è lieta di annunciare la pubblicazione del primo portale italiano di filosofia analitica. Grazie alla competenza e all&#8217;impegno degli autori italiani dei contributi presenti in questo primo numero, è ora possibile condividere un&#8217;esperienza iniziata da APhEx sei anni fa, per iniziativa di studenti di laurea specialistica, dottorandi e dottori di ricerca in Filosofia di &#8220;Sapienza&#8221;, &#8220;Roma Tre&#8221;, &#8220;Luiss&#8221;.</p>
<p>Da allora APhEx organizza regolarmente seminari ed incontri, tenuti da studenti o da esperti, per creare un ambiente che possa favorire il dibattito, piuttosto raro nelle nostre università, su problemi attuali in diversi campi di ricerca: filosofia analitica, etica analitica, filosofia della scienza, logica, epistemologia, filosofia della biologia, scienze cognitive e filosofia dell&#8217;Intelligenza Artificiale.</p>
<p>Attraverso il presente portale, la redazione APhEx propone la propria ricerca ai lettori e invita loro a collaborare, inviando (all&#8217;indirizzo: <a href="mailto:redazione@aphex.it">redazione@aphex.it</a> ) recensioni di libri e articoli o scrivendo un contributo per la rubrica Profili o Temi. Il portale comprende infatti tre sezioni principali Temi, Profili e Recensioni e tre rubriche Eventi, Interviste e Video. La redazione si augura che il portale diventi un punto di riferimento per i giovani studiosi italiani di filosofia analitica, uno strumento di discussione e di ricerca. <p><strong>First Call for Papers<br />
</strong>In the fifty years of the publication of Word and Object, the conference aims to celebrate one of<br />
America’s most famous and influential philosophers and mathematicians: W.V.O. Quine. The<br />
purpose of the conference is to discuss and explore some of the major Quinean theses: his<br />
objections to the analytic/synthetic distinction, meaning scepticism, inscrutability of reference,<br />
indeterminacy of translation, his views on logic and philosophy of mathematics, his stance on<br />
metaphysics and ontological commitment.</p>

</strong>We invite all graduate and postgraduate students, who currently work in Quine’s philosophy, to<br />
submit papers which should be preferentially in &#8211; but not limited to &#8211; one of those issues:</p>
<p>Epistemological and Linguistic Holism;<br />
Naturalism and naturalization;<br />
Ontological Relativity and Relativism;<br />
Quine on logic and science.</p>
<p>Please submit abstracts, written in English and prepared for blind-review, of no more than 500<br />
words. Submissions are made electronically by email attachment to Francesca Ervas at<br />
<a href="mailto:ervas@uniroma3.it">ervas@uniroma3.it</a> and Vera Tripodi at <a href="mailto:vera.tripodi@uniroma1.it">vera.tripodi@uniroma1.it</a> by 1 March 2010. You will be sent<br />

Vorrei piuttosto soffermarmi su un aspetto su cui, </span></span></span><span style="border-collapse:separate;"><span style="font-family:Garamond;"><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-size:14px;">da qualche settimana, rifletto con una certa inquietudine. </span></span></span></span></div>

<div><span style="border-collapse:separate;"><span style="font-family:Garamond;"><span style="border-collapse:collapse;"><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-size:14px;">Dopo la visione del documentario, ho fatto alcune ricerche e ho appreso che in Italia é enormemente cresciuta la richiesta che le minorenni rivolgono ai propri genitori - come regalo di compleanno o per una promozione - di un intervento chirurgico per aumentare il seno. </span></span></span></span></span></div>

Questa</span></span></span><span style="color:#222222;line-height:18px;"><span style="font-family:Garamond;"><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-size:14px;"> richiesta é talmente alta che ha spinto alcuni parlamentari a proporre una legge che vieti l&#8217;impianto di protesi mammarie alle ragazze sotto i 18 anni. </span></span></span></span></div>

<div><span style="font-family:Garamond;"><span style="font-size:medium;"><span style="font-size:14px;">Personalmente, sono sempre stata dell&#8217;idea che lo Stato non debba limitare la libertà di un individuo ad intervenire sul proprio corpo come vuole o meglio crede (eutanasia, suicidio, rifiuto di una cura, aborto, ecc.). </span></span></span></div>

Confesso che posso comprendere le ragioni di chi ha avanzato una proposta del genere. </span></span></span></div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span>Vorrei sottoporre alla vostra attenzione un argomento contro il convenzionalismo sulla metrica del tempo. Leibniz aveva già notato che lo scettico sull&#8217;oggettività metrica del tempo ha vita più facile del suo &#8220;cugino&#8221; spaziale. Possiamo constatare se due pezzi di legno hanno la stessa lunghezza confrontandoli direttamente, mentre per constatare se due eventi in successione hanno la stessa durata dobbiamo per forza ricorrere a un terzo elemento: (semplificando un po’) un meccanismo che produca intervalli <em>regolari</em>, ossia della stessa lunghezza. Ma come constatiamo l’isocronia di tali intervalli? Ovviamente, introdurre un secondo orologio innescherebbe uno spiacevole regresso. Ci può venir voglia quindi di abbandonare l’oggettivismo metrico e abbracciare il convenzionalismo: che due eventi non simultanei siano isocroni o meno non è un dato di fatto, ma dipende dalla convenzione che adottiamo. Quindi due eventi possono avere la stessa durata stando ad alcune convenzioni, mentre avere durate diverse stando ad altre convenzioni. Solo se iniziano e finiscono allo stesso momento siamo giustificati a credere che siano isocroni (indipendentemente da ogni convenzione, e quindi presumibilmente stando a ogni convenzione).</span></p>
<p><span>Immaginiamoci la seguente situazione. Una bomba con un timer viene trovata e un artificiere è immediatamente chiamato. Questi, osservata con cura la bomba, deduce che si tratta di un meccanismo del tutto analogo a quello che il giorno prima, durante una esercitazione, ha disinnescato in 2 minuti netti. Guarda il timer, che segna 2 minuti e 10 secondi, e pensa “se ci metto quanto ci ho messo ieri, ce la faccio”.</span></p>
<p><span>Ora, per l’oggettivista le cose stanno proprio così, basta che lui ci metta quanto ci ha messo ieri, e non muore. Ma per il convenzionalista no: perché stando ad alcune convenzioni la sua esercitazione ieri dura meno del lasso di tempo che passerà fra il suo pensiero e l’esplosione della bomba, ma stando ad altre no. La sua vita, quindi, sembra dipendere non solo dalla sua velocità come artificiere, ma anche dalla convenzione che adottiamo, il che &#8211; non trattandosi di un soldato che deve difendere un confine &#8211; appare bizzarro.  Più precisamente, per l&#8217;oggettivista l&#8217;arteficiere è giustificato a credere che se farà più o meno le cose che ha fatto ieri, il lasso di tempo che ci metterà a finire sarà tale che non morirà. Ma per il convenzionalista, per cui non è un dato di fatto che il lasso di tempo che ci metterà e quello passato ieri durante l&#8217;esercitazione siano uguali (né che non siano uguali), l&#8217;arteficiere non può essere giustificato a pensarla così.</span></p>
<p><span>Come tutti gli argomenti “antiscettici” ha un po’ l’aria della petizione di principio, ma non mi sembra se la cavi peggio di altri. Che vi sembra?</span></p>

<p>Pragmatism &amp; Democracy, special issue of Etica &amp; Politica, 2, 2010. Guest editors: Roberto Frega, Fabrizio Trifirò</p>
<p>Since the early Eighties the pragmatist philosophical tradition has been enjoying renewed interest throughout the field of humanities. Our focus in this issue of Ethics &amp; Politics is on pragmatism as a tradition within contemporary political philosophy capable of offering original and proficuous insights into the theory and practice of democracy. From its inception in the works of its founding fathers up until contemporary reappraisals and reelaborations of traditional pragmatist themes and approaches, the pragmatist tradition has defied every attempt at defining its specific identity. Throughout its historical development it has given voice to a great variety of conflicting positions and perspectives on central issues of democratic theory and practice ranging from the epistemic to the ethical nature of democratic decision-making procedures, from &#8216;thin&#8217;-procedural to &#8216;thick&#8217;-substantial views of the normative scope and content of democracy, and from liberal to communitarian conceptions of democratic life and society. Moreover, while some pragmatists are primarily engaged in the theoretical and foundational project of defining and justifying democratic principles and institutions, others see pragmatism primary contribution to politics as the critical and educational effort of shaping and transforming actual democratic practice and culture.</p>
<p>Devoting an issue to &#8220;Pragmatism &amp; Democracy&#8221;, the philosophical journal Ethics &amp; Politics would like to offer an overview of contemporary reflections on democracy that can be regarded as falling within the pragmatist tradition with the double intent of both exploring the richness and variety of this tradition whilst at the same time raising the question of its specificity and identity.</p>
<p>To this aim, we invite contributions addressing one or more of the following themes:</p>
<p>1. The contemporary relevance of classical American pragmatism for democratic theory and practice</p>
<p>2. Contemporary pragmatist contributions to the theorization of democracy and political philosophy more generally</p>
<p>3. Pragmatist positions within and beyond the above mentioned dualisms: thick v. thin, procedural v. substantial, liberal v. communitarian, epistemic v. ethical, justificatory v. transformational approaches to democratic politics</p>
<p>4. The place and role pragmatism accords to philosophy within politics and society</p>
<p>5. Pragmatism and citizenship education</p>
<p>Contributions should be written either in English, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and German and should not exceed 10,000 words. Abstracts of 400 words should be sent by email to the guest editors by April 30th 2009. Acceptance of papers will be communicated by June 31st 2009. Accepted papers should be submitted in full by April 30th 2010. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Buongiorno a tutti. Vorrei discutere coi lettori di <i>variabili libere</i> del <i>cogito</i>. Recentemente c&#8217;ho ripensato un po&#8217; su e annotato le mie considerazioni in un testo che allego qui in formato pdf. La mia tesi è che, nonostante tutto (e cioè, nonostante p. es. le precisazioni di Cartesio, le proposte interpretative di Hintikka), il <em>cogito</em> sia un sillogismo. Spero di poter ricevere impressioni, critiche, suggerimenti. Buona giornata</p>

<p>avvio questo post perché sono in cerca di aiuto. Qualcuno di voi può darmi delle dritte bibliografiche riguardanti il battesimo iniziale nella teoria causale del riferimento (oltre a &#8220;Naming and Necessity&#8221;, ovviamente)?</p>
<p>L&#8217;argomento mi interessa molto, ma non mi pare ci sia molta letteratura a riguardo.</p>
<p>Giusto per fomentare un po&#8217; la polemica, posso dire che ho la vaga sensazione che nella teoria del battesimo iniziale ci sia un residuo descrittivo. Non credo che questo metta in pericolo l&#8217;intero impianto semantico-causale, poiché, una volta che il riferimento di un nome proprio (per considerare solo il caso più semplice) sia stato fissato, quel nome si riferisce al proprio referente senza mediazioni descrittive di sorta. Tuttavia, è cosa nota che Kripke non si spreca molto a spiegare come funzioni il battesimo iniziale e, inoltre, ci sono un paio di citazioni da &#8220;Naming and Necessity&#8221; che mi hanno messo in difficoltà (cito, &#8220;Naming and Necessity&#8221;, pagina 96):</p>
<p>&#8220;A rough statement of the theory might be as follows: An initial &#8216;baptism&#8217; takes place. Here the object may be named by ostension, or the reference of the name may be fixed by a description.&#8221;</p>
<p>e aggiunge in nota:</p>
<p>&#8220;The case of baptism by ostension can perhaps be subsumed under the description concept also. Thus the primary applicability of the description theory is to cases of initial baptism.&#8221;</p>
<p>Le mie perplessità riguardano la nozione extralinguistica di ostensione. Una volta che infatti volessimo fornire una sorta di controparte linguistica del mero gesto, mi pare che dovremmo utilizzare qualche genere di descrizione.</p>
<p>Intuizioni? Consigli bibliografici?</p>
